How to Safely Use a Cement Mixer

Construction machinery can have lots of pinch and nip points such as chain drives, sprockets, belts, and a variety of other rotating and moving parts—and a portable cement mixer is no different. Although pre-mixed concrete can be delivered to your job site, saving you time and the dangers of using a cement mixer, you might be working on a smaller project that supports the use of a portable cement mixing machine. In this case, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with safe operating practices for using a cement mixer to avoid any serious injuries to yourself and your construction crew.

Prepare Work Area

First and foremost, before turning the cement mixer on make sure the work area is clear of debris and obstructions that might cause the operator to slip, trip, or fall into the mixer. Also make sure the cement mixer is positioned on a flat and level surface to prevent tipping or rolling. It’s also important that operators dress appropriately for the job, as loose clothing and jewelry can get caught in the moving parts.

Check the Mixer

Before the mixer is turned on, inspect the machine and make sure any broken or missing parts or repaired or replaced prior to use. Also check that the electrical power cord is in good condition, and look inside the mixer to ensure that all tools and other equipment are removed prior to turning the machine on.

Use as Directed

If you’re renting a portable cement mixer, make sure to read the manual carefully and only use as directed. Overloading the mixing, using the wrong attachments and accessories, or using the cement mixer for any other purpose than intended by the manufacturer can lead to unsafe operating conditions—not to mention equipment damage that might cost you a lot of time and money to address.

Truth be told, it’s a lot easier and safer just to have ready-mix concrete delivered directly to your jobsite. Some concrete delivery companies in San Francisco can even have your concrete delivered to your job site on the same day that you need it.
