Types of Concrete Additives

concrete additivesConcrete additives are specially designed “ingredients” that affect specific properties of the concrete during or after setting for superior results compared to traditional concrete mixtures. Additives can be used to speed up or slow down the curing time, improve the overall strength and integrity of the finished product, and even reduce the amount of water needed to produce concrete. If you’re ordering concrete in San Francisco, you may be able to add one or more of these specialty ingredients to ensure that your concrete meets your specific and exacting needs. Here’s a quick look at some of the different types of concrete additives in use today.

Water-Reducing Additives – Water-reducing concrete additives can reduce water demand by up to 10%, and water reduces even increase a concrete mixtures strength. These special additives also reduce the total carbon dioxide emissions produced per volume unit of concrete, resulting in a greener and more eco-friendly product.

Accelerating/Retarding Additives – In some cases, faster or slower curing time is needed depending on the concrete application and the conditions in which the concrete is being installed. Accelerating additives are useful for setting concrete in cold weather, while retarding additives counteract the accelerating effect of hot weather.

Corrosion-Inhibiting Additives – Corrosion inhibitors are typically added to concrete mixtures that will be exposed to high concentrations of chloride, such as concrete marine facilities, highway bridges, and parking garages. The additives slow corrosion of the reinforcing steel on top of which the concrete is set.

Fiber Additives – Fiber-reinforced concrete provides incredible strength and durability in residential and light commercial concrete construction projects without needing reinforcing steel supports. Concrete fiber additives also reduce the permeability of the mixture, making it easier for a concrete structure to hold up where it may be exposed to dripping water, rainfall, or high humidity.
